Beaumont Leys Library is a very modern, airy and well-stocked area located right at the entrance to the school for the use of students and staff. We provide an excellent, up-to-date selection of both fiction and non-fiction books, magazines and newspapers. It is extremely busy and well used and can accommodate up to sixty students. We also provide computers for homework and coursework purposes. Students use the library for recreational reading as well as study and research lessons. The librarian works closely with members of staff in order to support the curriculum. Students are encouraged to help choose some of the stock for the library and may request books they wish to read.
Reading Rampage 2016
The library is currently taking part in the Reading Rampage Competition run by Leicester City Council and the Whatever it Takes initiative.
All Year 7 students are invited to enter and read up to twenty books in the hopes of becoming the school’s Year 7 reading champion. The competition runs until June.
The Reading Rampage event is run in conjunction with Leicester City Council and the ‘Whatever it Takes’ initiative. Year 7 Students are encouraged to read twenty specially selected books and write reviews and create posters about the books. Lessons and activities around these books will be held throughout April and May. The 10 pupils who have contributed most to the event will be invited to an award ceremony where they will meet the authors. One student will be crowned ‘Reading Champion’.
The Library currently houses 7,500 books with provision for subjects taught in school and a variety of fiction books for all tastes and abilities. We have the ‘i’ and the Leicester Mercury daily, plus the First Newspaper aimed at young people. In addition, we have a selection of popular culture and sport magazines.
We encourage students to become Student Librarians and conduct this process by job application and interview which gives them the experience of job applications and also being responsible and reliable in a work setting. We also have various competitions in the library throughout the year to further research skills such as poetry competitions, Easter Egg Hunts and Christmas quizzes. We do expect students to respect the environment and not bring food and drinks into the library.
The library is open before school, break time, lunch time and after school during the following times: 8am-4pm Monday to Thursday 8am-3.30pm Friday.
